Travel Tips: Booking Accommodation

There are two types of booking in my mind. Booking in advance to secure the best place with the group you have, and rocking up the day of or just before in hopes of getting a good deal and staying flexible. Now, I’ve done both and I understand the merits for each.

  1. Book your first place after a flight.

After a long day of traveling, I love to be able to know where I’m going and have it all arranged before I go so that I don’t have to worry once I get to my destination. Also, some countries require you to have an address on the visa or customs forms you fill out, so make sure you have something in mind.

2. Look at where the accommodation is located.

A place can look beautiful and have all the amenities you require, but could be 5km out of town and impossible to get to without having to pay $40 to get to each time you want to get into town. This has happened to me in Italy and I can tell you the view was beautiful, but the dough we shelled out for getting to and from town was not.

3. Check what amenities the accommodation has to offer.

What do you need to be comfortable? Do you need good wifi? Do you need a pool because the temperature is going to be +38C degrees? Make sure you check out the options around the city, because there is bound to be something that has everything you need. If not, figure out what you’re prepared to compromise on so you don’t end up grumpy and wifi-less in your hotel.

4. Check out a few websites to see what they have to offer.

Certain cities have more options on Booking.com, some have options only available on Hostel World. There is also Hotels.com, Expedia, Kayak… The list is endless. But if you’re looking to book ahead, you can take the time to do your research to find exactly what you need.
